Data Bridge

...is a DELUXE LTOOL which can be used to drag or paste data from Ancestry.com and other online Data Sources into your Legacy database.

Online databases that are currently supported include:

Note: If you would like to add other online databases to this LTool, please contact me at [mailto:dennis@zippersoftware.com,dennis@zippersoftware.com]. The charge is US$20.00 for each additional online database (which covers the cost of analyzing your request, tweaking the code, testing, documentation, and deployment). The only requirements are that I must have access to the database (in other words, no subscription fee) for testing, and that the database displays the data in a parseable format.

Note: I have uploaded a short video (1 min., 7.5MB, Flash) that shows the Data Bridge in action.

Usage:

To drag or paste data from Ancestry.com and other online Data Sources into your Legacy database:

  1. If you wish to fetch individuals by Individual Tag, open your database in Legacy and tag the individuals that you wish to work with.
  2. Back up your Legacy database.
  3. Close Legacy.
  4. Open your Legacy database in _LTools_.
  5. Double-click Data Bridge in the Deluxe LTools tree to bring up the main dialog for this LTool.

  6. If you are going to fetch individuals by Individual Tag, click on the Individual Tag label and select the Individual Tag you used in step #1.
  7. If you are going to fetch individuals by Surname like, click on the Surname like label and enter as much of the surname as you like.
  8. Select the Data Source you wish to use for the drag/paste operation.
  9. Click the Fetch button. You will experience a delay while _LTools_ retrieves a list of individuals. The length of the delay depends on how many individuals need to be retrieved. If you are fetching by surname, the wait can be lengthy if you only entered the first character of the surname.

  10. Choose the individual you would like to be the target of the drag/paste operation by double-clicking on the person's row. This will bring up the Data Bridge Detail dialog for that individual...

    uri/../images/deluxe-data-bridge-detail-before.jpg

At the same time it will launch a search query for this individual in your default web browser.

    uri/../images/deluxe-data-bridge-search.jpg

The search query *MAY or MAY NOT* bring up a list which contains the individual you are looking for.

  11. On the search query page, navigate to the detail page for the individual you are looking for. This may involve changing the search criteria if the individual was not listed in the initial search. You should eventually get to a page that looks similar to this (depending on the Data Source you are using):

    uri/../images/deluxe-data-bridge-search-detail.jpg

  12. Select the text on the page that you wish to drop/paste from. Make sure you also select the labels so that _LTools_ can parse it properly.

    uri/../images/deluxe-data-bridge-search-detail-selected.jpg

  13. Now drag the selected text from your browser window to the _LTools_ Data Bridge Detail dialog and drop it there. (Note: You can also copy the selected text from your browser window (CTL+C) and paste it to the _LTools_ Data Bridge Detail dialog (CTL+V).) The _LTools_ Data Bridge Detail dialog should end up looking something like this:

    uri/../images/deluxe-data-bridge-detail-after.jpg

  14. If you need to change any data in the Data Source Value column, you can do so by selecting a cell and clicking once (or use \).
  15. Check the boxes in the Update and/or Source columns for the fields in your Legacy database that you wish to update and/or source.

    uri/../images/deluxe-data-bridge-detail-after-2.jpg

In this example I appended ", USA" to the _Birth Location_ field and chose to update and source the _First Name_ and _Birth Location_ fields. Also note that I chose to update and source _\*Event\*_. By doing so, this LTool will update an existing event or add a new event. If you wish to update/insert events, make sure you use Event Setup... to enter the template that _LTools_ will use to build the event record.

  16. Before going any further, you should use Source Setup... and Event Setup... to setup your source and event templates. There is more information about these at the following links...

    [#70-en,Source Setup...]

    [#71-en,Event Setup...]

  17. Lastly, click the Apply button to update your Legacy database.
